bantry-bay

We here at Save Our Sprat want to stop the indiscriminate fishing of Sprat in Bantry Bay to ensure its future as a key link in the food chain on which our marine life and the people around the Bay are dependent on.

Sprat trawling in Bantry Bay usually occurs from September to January. Time is running out to stop this environmentally destructive practice.

left until next sprat trawl

A word from one of our founding members Dolf

What is a sprat?

Industrial scale inshore trawling up to the shoreline and in our Special Area of Conservation (SAC) threatens the complete collapse of this local Sprat population which, as a key food species of the marine environment, will cause the starvation and loss of huge numbers of sea and bird life. This indiscriminate harvesting of Sprat during its spawning cycle is impacting all local sea and bird life including whales, dolphins, seals (Irelands largest colony), many fish species and the success of the re - introduced White - tailed Sea Eagle breeding program on Garnish IslandThis practise also threatens the local tourist trade and the livelihood of our small fishermen!
